Meaning

“Spanish variant of Elias, traditionally linked to Hebrew 'the Lord is my God'”

The story

Elian carries an ancient declaration into a very modern memory. It is a Spanish route to Elias, from the Hebrew name traditionally understood as “my God is Yahweh.” In late 1999, six-year-old Elián González was rescued at sea off Florida after his mother and others died trying to reach the United States. The custody struggle that followed drew Cuba and the United States into months of argument, with a small child at the center of a story adults made enormous. For many Americans, those headlines were the first time the name became familiar. They are not the whole name. Elian continued to be used long after the news cameras left, and today a child bearing it is far more likely to meet the sound before the history. That is the gentler ending this story deserves. A biblical family gave the name its depth, one boy gave it a painful public chapter, and later families allowed Elian to become an ordinary child's name again.
