Meaning

"harp player," an occupational surname from the medieval minstrel's craft; almost unknown as a girls' first name before the 2000s, then a leader of the musical-surname wave. Literary in association, folk in root, modern in effect

The story

Harper named the medieval minstrel, the one who actually played the harp in the hall, and it survived as an English occupational surname long after the halls fell silent. Its life as a girls' first name is startlingly young: effectively absent from US records until the 2000s. By most accounts the early appeal owed much to Harper Lee, whose To Kill a Mockingbird had made the surname a shorthand for literary conscience. Then the curve went nearly vertical, leaping through the 2010s to a 2020s peak near the top of the charts. David and Victoria Beckham gave the name to their daughter in 2011, squarely in the steepest stretch, and while nobody can prove what moved whom, the timing is hard to ignore. Folk in its root, literary in its association, and entirely modern in effect, Harper manages all three registers at once.
