The story
Everleigh barely existed before this century: 69 girls in the 2000s, then more than 7,000 in the 2010s, then 13,600 and counting so far this decade. It is what happens when two currents meet. One is Everly, an English surname from a place name traditionally read as boar meadow, carried through pop history by the Everly Brothers and lately revived as a girls' name. The other is the -leigh spelling wave that already produced Ashleigh and Kayleigh, an ending that makes a new name look like it has a past. Because the SSA counts each spelling separately, Everleigh, Everly and Everlee chart on their own lines, and the sound they share is bigger than any single line shows. Our records make this one nearly unanimous, about 20,900 girls against a handful of boys. Day to day, many answer to Evie, or simply Ever.
