The story

Jonah comes from the Hebrew Yona, meaning dove. In the biblical story, the prophet flees a command to preach in Nineveh, is thrown from a storm-tossed ship, survives inside a great fish for three days, and returns ready to continue. Medieval Europe knew the story well and sometimes used the Greek-shaped Jonas, while the form Jonah became more common in English after the Protestant Reformation. The US curve tells a much newer growth story. Jonah stays near the floor through most of the twentieth century, begins to move in the 1990s, rises in the 2000s and 2010s, and reaches its highest point in the 2020s. The name therefore feels current without being newly invented. Its short sound carries a dove, a difficult prophet, and centuries of retelling, while the American record shows families discovering the form at a scale previous generations did not.
