Meaning

form of Luke, traditionally "man from Lucania"

Famously borne by Luka Modrić.

The story

For Suzanne Vega, Luka was a name on mail meant for somebody else. She recalled receiving mail intended for the boy who lived upstairs, and the name stayed with her. She heard something universal in it, she said, and chose it for her song. Luka belongs to the Lucas family and has forms in several languages, including Croatian, Serbian, Slovene and Georgian. That spread gives the name a world outside the recording, although Vega's sense of it was her own artistic response. Her song Luka addresses child abuse through a fictional child. Vega was explicit that the real boy upstairs was not an abused child. She borrowed a name she had encountered in ordinary life; the difficult story attached to it was a work of songwriting.
