Luke reaches back to the Greek Loukas, read by most scholars as a man from Lucania, a region of southern Italy, the same root that gives us Lucas. Its fame rests on one figure: Luke the physician, companion of Paul, credited by tradition with writing both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, and honored as the patron saint of doctors and artists.
