Meaning

variant of Reuben, "behold, a son"

The story

Ruben is a widely traveled form of Reuben, the biblical eldest son of Jacob and Leah. The Hebrew story explains the name with a phrase usually rendered behold, a son, though that traditional wordplay is more certain than a simple modern dictionary translation. Ruben belongs to many languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Scandinavian, Armenian, and several Slavic traditions. An eleventh-century Armenian ruler of Cilicia also carried the form, showing that its history reaches well beyond modern American spelling taste. The US curve begins with a quiet but continuous presence, rises a little in the middle decades, and settles into a higher band from the 1990s through the 2020s. That is not a sudden rediscovery. Ruben has moved steadily among languages and generations while keeping its biblical family recognizable. The missing second e makes it look streamlined in English, but internationally it is an old form in its own right.
