Meaning

“English surname form of Sidney; also associated with the Australian city named for Viscount Sydney”

The story

Sydney entered given-name use through an English surname, itself a variant of Sidney. The name also carries the enormous association of Sydney, Australia, named in 1788 for Thomas Townshend, Viscount Sydney. That civic history is real, while the often repeated meaning wide meadow is not a secure etymology for this spelling. In American records Sydney is a modern feminine wave. It barely appears before the 1970s, climbs in the 1980s, surges to its peak in the 1990s and 2000s, and then eases through the 2010s and 2020s. The Australian city gave the name a bright geographic image even for families with no direct connection to it, while surname style made it feel tailored rather than ornate. Sydney now carries both a global place and a recognizable American generation, with neither story needing a false meadow underneath.
