The story
Payton is a modern English variant of Peyton, used for women and men, through an English surname from a place name meaning "Pæga’s town." One Payton’s story begins with a letter rather than a finish line. In 1938, runner Payton Jordan answered Soviet sprinter Gavriel Korobkov’s request for advice, sending his training routine, diet and exercises. They later met as coaches in Moscow, and their friendship helped bring the American and Soviet track teams together at Stanford in 1962. The Cold War setting makes the meet’s closing scene especially striking. The flag-bearers embraced, and athletes from the two teams walked around the track arm in arm while the crowd cheered. Jordan’s reply had begun with practical details about running; the story eventually brought the runners onto the same track. American football later kept both spellings visible through Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears and quarterback Peyton Manning; records cannot show whether either affected naming.
