The story
Tania is a spelling variant of Tanya, the Russian diminutive of Tatiana. Tatiana goes back to the Roman family name Tatianus, whose deeper meaning is unknown, so decorative translations attached to Tania should be treated cautiously. Russian literature made the nickname famous through Tatyana in Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, and English, Italian, and Spanish speakers later adopted Tania as a complete given name. The American curve begins quietly in the 1930s, grows in small steps through the middle decades, reaches its broadest level from the 1990s through the 2010s, and eases in the 2020s. The spelling without y travels especially easily across Spanish and Italian. Tania is therefore both intimate and independent: born as family speech around Tatiana, but established far beyond Russia as the form written on its bearers' own documents.
