"strong, healthy," from valere, to be well; the name of a great Roman family and an early martyr, alive ever since in Italian and Spanish. The original that Valerie descends from, and lately the more popular of the two in America

Also written Valéria.

The story

Valeria is ancient Roman, the feminine form of Valerius, a family name tied to the Latin valere, 'to be strong' or 'to be well.' A second-century Saint Valeria helped carry it into Christian use, but the name never belonged to one country. Italian, Spanish, Romanian, Russian, and Ukrainian families all use recognizable forms of it. In the American record Valeria spent most of the twentieth century quietly present, then began climbing in the 1990s. It reached a stronger level in the 2000s and has held close to it through the 2010s and 2020s, a rise without the sharp fall of a fad. The sound helps explain the reach: four open syllables in Spanish, a crisp V at the front, and Val or Vale waiting inside. Strength is not just the traditional meaning; it describes the curve.
