Meaning

An ancient Roman praenomen whose meaning is unknown. A link to Latin titulus, "title of honour", has been proposed, but the name may instead be Oscan.

The story

Titus is a Roman praenomen so old that its meaning is lost. Guesses run from the Latin titulus, a title of honor, to an Oscan or Sabine root, since one of the earliest to bear it was the legendary Sabine king Titus Tatius. History then filled it in. The emperor Titus completed the Colosseum and was remembered by Romans as the darling of the human race, and in the New Testament Titus is the trusted companion Paul left in charge of the church on Crete, addressee of one of Paul's letters. Shakespeare gave the name its darkest turn in Titus Andronicus. In the United States Titus reads more current now than it has in a long time, at home among the revived Roman and biblical names. Compact and unmistakably classical, it carries an emperor, a saint's correspondent and a tragedy in five short letters.
