Titus was a Roman given name whose meaning is unknown. Roman legend also names a king called Titus Tatius, ruler of the Sabines, another ancient Italian people.
The emperor Titus opened the Colosseum in Rome in 80 CE. Earlier, he had led the Roman campaign that destroyed Jerusalem and its Temple in 70 CE. The Arch of Titus shows soldiers carrying away Temple treasures, including its seven-branched lampstand. The Roman writer Suetonius later praised Titus as the "delight and darling of the human race."
The New Testament Titus is a different figure, a coworker of Paul. The Letter to Titus addresses him as the person organizing the Christian community on Crete and choosing its leaders. Titus has also been used occasionally as an English given name since the Protestant Reformation, the period when Protestant churches emerged.
Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus adds another Roman setting. Its Titus is a fictional general, not the emperor. After he orders the killing of Tamora’s son, their families become caught in a cycle of revenge.
