“God is gracious”

Famously borne by Joan Mitchell, whose tangled color fields channeled remembered landscapes.

The story

Joan is a medieval English form of Johanne, but one young French bearer made it sound inseparable from history. Joan of Arc came from a farming village, entered a war, helped lift the siege of Orléans, and was captured and tried by a church court allied with her enemies. She was condemned and burned at Rouen. Years later, a second inquiry heard witnesses who had known her, reviewed the first proceeding, and annulled its judgment. The remarkable part is not only that Joan's reputation changed. Both trials left records, so a teenager from the fifteenth century can still be encountered answering judges in her own sharp, cautious voice. Legend has surrounded her ever since, but the paperwork keeps interrupting the statue. The name itself is an old feminine branch of John, ultimately tied to God's grace. Its strongest association, however, is a person who refused to become simple even in the hands of her admirers.
