The story
John is the bedrock. From the Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious, it entered Europe with John the Baptist and John the Evangelist and became so universal that by some counts of medieval English records roughly one man in five answered to it. Kings, popes, pilgrims: for eight centuries it was less a name than a rank. In America it sat at or near the very top of the charts through the early twentieth century, and its slide since has been the gentlest kind, a long easing rather than a fall; there are far fewer new Johns than a century ago, but the name has never left the ranks of the standards. Jack, its ancient nickname, has even spun off into a favorite in its own right. Some names are fashion. John is furniture: it holds the whole room up.
