The path behind that form crosses more than one language. Ciberdúvidas traces Hebrew Johanan through Greek Ioánes or Ioánnes to Latin Jo(h)anne-. The same source says the Hebrew form has several interpretations. That caution matters. The transmission can be described; one English gloss cannot be crowned as the name's single settled meaning.
