Ingrid
Meaning
“Ing's beauty (Old Norse Ingiridr, the god Ing + frid 'beautiful, beloved'); a durable classic across Blumenau and Pomerode's German-Brazilian families”
Famously borne by Princess Ingrid Alexandra, heir to the Norwegian throne.
The story
Ingrid is Old Norse Ingríðr, and the references insist on the full meaning: not just beautiful, but Ing is beautiful, the old fertility god's name folded into the compliment. Its most famous bearer came with the name pre-endorsed: Ingrid Bergman, born in Stockholm in 1915, was named after Princess Ingrid of Sweden, and went on to win three Academy Awards and to walk through Casablanca as Ilsa. The princess became a queen, too: Ingrid of Sweden ruled beside Frederik IX of Denmark from 1947, mother of Queen Margrethe, remembered for loosening the starch of Danish court life. The American record gave the name a long, steady middle: 4,873 girls in the 1960s, another 4,036 in the 2000s. Brazil counted 130,768 in 2022, most of them young. A name that promises beauty on a god's authority and has kept royal company the whole way.
