The story
Muddy water running off an overworked hillside caught Jared Eliot’s attention during visits to his Connecticut parish. He tested farming methods on his own land and published advice later collected in 1760. One machine he worked on was ambitious: a drill plow that could open a furrow, sow seed and deposit manure. A Pennsylvania test, however, ran into alignment trouble. The Franklin Papers’ editors credit Eliot’s work with Killingworth wheelwright Benoni Hillyer, also recorded as Hilliard, rather than giving one man the whole invention. The name Jared has been used in English since the Reformation and comes from a Hebrew name meaning “descent.” Its biblical family history includes Jared as Enoch’s father in Genesis. Eliot supplies a different kind of inheritance: observations, experiments and a useful reminder that an ingenious machine still has to run straight.
