Jessica
The story
Jessica enters the written record in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, as Shylock's daughter, and the playwright likely built her name from Iscah, a figure who appears in a single verse of Genesis and was spelled Jeska in the Bibles of his day. Then the name waited. It stayed uncommon for nearly four centuries, until the mid-twentieth, when it began a climb with almost no equal in American records: from 1981 to 1997 Jessica was never lower than second among girls, and it held the top spot for most of 1985 through 1995, trading it only with Ashley. The fall came almost as fast, which is the signature of a truly generational name. Invented for one daughter on a London stage, it ended up naming a real generation.

Dickey Betts named this instrumental for his infant daughter, and built the melody around the way she looked bouncing around the room to the music. All sunshine and open road, and later the theme tune a whole generation knew from Top Gear.
