Meaning

“Hispanicized form of Mapuche Lef-Traru: lef, 'swift', plus traru, a bird of prey glossed 'hawk' or as the traro caracara; borne by the great 16th-century Mapuche toqui”

The story

Lautaro is one of the few names here born in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche: Lef-Traru joins lef, swift, with traru, a bird of prey the English references call a hawk and the Spanish ones call the traro, Chile's caracara. The sixteenth-century toqui Lautaro was a Mapuche war leader who led the resistance against Spanish conquest in Chile and shaped the tactics his people kept using through the long Arauco war, until his death in battle in 1557. Modern Argentina made the name a fixture: Buenos Aires' civil registry ranked Lautaro among its top ten boys' names for two straight decades, and Lautaro Martínez carries it today as a striker for Inter Milan. Brazil's 2022 census found 103, a third of them born in the 2010s. A swift hawk that crossed the Andes and kept its wings.
