Paxton is an English place-surname, Paecc's settlement in the old reading, but American ears hear the pax, the Latin peace, and the name profits from an etymology it does not technically own. The record shows a long idle, under 350 a decade into the 1980s, then the surname wave found it: about 1,500 in the 1990s, 4,000 in the 2000s, and 16,100 in the 2010s, a fourfold decade with no single cause on record, and we decline to invent one; the -ton squad, Colton to Ashton, rose together.
