The story

Ryan is an Irish surname that crossed over to the first-name side: Ó Riain, descendant of Rian. What Rian itself meant is honestly unknown; Irish scholars say the name is so ancient its meaning was lost before records began, though tradition reads a little king into rí plus a diminutive ending. In America the rise was patient, then unstoppable. Ryan entered the top 1000 in 1946 and climbed for three decades, with the 1970 film Ryan's Daughter putting it on marquees just as the ascent steepened, and from 1976 to 2006 it sat in the top 20, thirty years in which nearly every classroom had one. A name that outlived its own meaning spent a generation earning a new one, and wears it lightly.
