The story

Skyler is the Dutch schuyler, the scholar, worn into an American name that families now hear as the sky with a settled spelling. The record is genuinely shared: about 41,800 boys to 27,700 girls all-time, and this decade the lead has flipped, 3,137 girls to 2,313 boys so far. The rise was steep: about 3,900 in the 1980s, 17,800 in the 1990s, cresting at 24,300 in the 2000s, then 17,800 in the 2010s. Skylar, the sister spelling one letter away, runs bigger, about 105,700 to 69,500, and the two move together the way spelling couples do. Television handed the name its most argued-over bearer in the 2010s, the chemistry teacher's wife, and the name outlasted the argument. A scholar at the root, a sky in the ear: Skyler reads bright both ways.

Not on the Montevideo record for 1940 to 2011: that registry withholds nothing, so this spelling was not given there in those years. Not on the France record: nametree keeps spellings that reached 20 births in some year, so rarer uses are not shown. Not on Norway’s list: Statistics Norway lists only first names carried by 200 or more living people, so rarer names are not shown.
