messenger, angel

The story

Angela comes from the Late Latin Angelus and ultimately the Greek angelos, messenger. Christianity made angel the familiar heavenly messenger, and Angela developed as the feminine form within that tradition. The name was used in Italy and elsewhere in Europe for centuries before becoming common in the English-speaking world in the eighteenth century. Its American chart is a classic rise and fall: Angela first gathers in the 1930s and 1940s, climbs through the 1950s and 1960s, reaches its strongest point in the 1970s, and then recedes in every later decade. Angie gives it a friendly everyday form, while Angela keeps its cross-language clarity in English, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and other communities. The meaning is often summarized as angel, but messenger is the older word underneath, a small distinction that gives the familiar name its real history.
