Meaning

place name/surname, "southern settlement"

The story

Sutton means exactly what it looks like in Old English, the southern settlement, which is why England holds dozens of Suttons and why the surname traveled so widely. As a first name it idled for most of a century, a couple dozen boys in the 1910s, a few dozen girls in the 1960s, never enough to call a direction. The 2000s carried it past a thousand for the first time, and then the direction changed hands: through the 1990s Sutton went mostly to boys, but girls pulled ahead in the 2010s and now lead about two to one, 8,300 girls to 4,000 boys so far this decade. Those are also the years Sutton Foster carried the name from Broadway onto television, a coincidence our decade buckets can point at but not prove. Either way, it now sits comfortably in the class of surname names claimed by both sides of the nursery.
